Why it worked

Ryze turned mana into ability power, then bought the two deepest mana pools available. Cooldown reduction shaved down a rotation that had no gaps to begin with, which made him less a caster with spells than one continuous stream of damage. Building tanky made him hit harder — the inversion that left him unbalanceable for ten years.
