Why it worked

The old turrets dealt full ability-power-scaled damage, never decayed, and could go up under an enemy tower. Two items in, a Heimerdinger had simply taken the lane — walking into it was not an option. His ultimate then upgraded the whole set at once, for a siege nobody broke.
